How to order a Small World Garden Plan

We currently have plans available for the four Small World Gardens displayed at the 2009 Northwest Flower and Garden Show (listed below). Each plan is for a different size of tray, but you can make minor adjustments to the planting arrangement if you want to adapt a plan from a smaller tray to a slightly larger one. The plans include the layout for hardscaping and plant placement, a plant list with recommended substitutions based on time of year and position in the planting layout, and planting/maintenance instructions. More plans will be available throughout the summer, so please check back regularly — we have some great Small World Gardens in the works for the 2009 growing season.

Email us and let us know which plan you want and your mailing address. Please read the fine print at the end of this page before placing your order.

You will receive an invoice by email once we've established the particulars of your order. We accept PayPal (you can pay with your credit card through PayPal), money orders, and cash. Upon receipt of payment, we will mail you the document plus a PDF file of your selected garden plan on CD. Prices below include shipping by USPS first class mail. Washington state sales tax will be added if applicable.

A sophisticated mixed-palette garden strong on burgundy, silver, and yellow-green. A variety of foliage textures and shapes adds contrast. Rosy globes of sea thrift on tall stems add a striking architectural note in the spring; mounding plants add interest later in the season. Miniature roses provide continuous bloom throughout the summer. Rosemary, sage, and thyme are at hand for the culinarily inclined. The central patio with opposing walkways is paved with tumbled slate tiles. A simulated wrought-iron fence creates an elegant enclosure.

This garden features a rectangular patio of tumbled travertine marble tiles in several sizes, including a large central motif. The large patio area is ideal for displaying 1/6 scale furniture or die-cast model bicycles (in which case the patio becomes a parking pad). A wide variety of textured foliage in shades of blue-green, silver, and green frame the patio on three sides. No fencing; the garden is framed by slim dwarf cypress along the back.

A charming small garden with lots of blossoms and a nice range of foliage colors and textures. Chubby hens and chicks frame the curving pebble path to a potted “tree” (box topiary or cotoneaster). Optional black cast metal fencing acts as backdrop (can be painted white). We recommend adding small bird or animal statues and stones engraved with sentiments.

Small World Garden Plan

*plus cost of 3 potted bonsai plants
Tray Dimensions: 39"W x 19.5"D x 6"H

Mid-20th century angularity goes Japanese. A slim profile garden with a square pool, embedded bonsai, and elegant shade-friendly plantings with variegated foliage and burgundy accents. Natural rock and moss provide additional texture. Zigzag patio of tumbled slate tiles. Pine bonsai is a striking focal point; impeditum azalea and maple add seasonal color accents. If you are a bonsai enthusiast, this is a lovely way to display your prized plants. (Plan is easily adapted to display three bonsai you already own.)

The Fine Print

This info is available elsewhere on this site, but we want you to have it at your fingertips while you're mulling over your order, so we're repeating it below.

Plants. Because of the unknown variable conditions at your site (weather and sun exposure, variability of maintenance, the occasional act of God, etc.) and because plants appear to have minds of their own and if one is determined to die it will, no matter how much pampering it gets, (just like one you're trying to kill off will last until the end of time), we can't be responsible for any die-off of plants we suggest for your Small World Garden. Many of the plants are annuals and will naturally go through their cycle over the season; these you will want to replace over time with new nursery treasures. If you monitor your garden closely, you'll discover its likes and dislikes and develop a nice relationship with it.

Poisonous Plants. Many common garden and house plants are poisonous, have poisonous parts, or can cause skin irritation. Some of the plants in our garden designs fall into this category. Our Small World Gardens are designed for the adult gardener who understands the risks of contacting and ingesting plant material. Parents of children who will be near or interacting with a Small World Garden should be apprised of the hazards and should then monitor their children accordingly. There are many books and websites with extensive lists of poisonous plants if you want to eliminate any risky parts of your garden.
